Companion of Necessity is an activated AA ability for the magician class.

The ability summons a giant fire elemental as a swarm pet to attack a target.  The swarm pet attacks relentlessly until it either dies or its duration runs out, at which point all mobs in a small area around the swarm pet become memblurred.

The ability has a 10 minute cooldown, which cannot (as of the Rain of Fear era) be shortened through any means.

Strategic Impact[]

Other than extreme disengagement tactics like casting Gate or zoning, Companion of Necessity is the only magician ability that can allow a mage to remove himself or herself from a fight once it has started.  (A well-timed Call of the Hero can accomplish this for other players, but not for the mage.)  This makes Companion of Necessity an obvious choice for an emergency disengagement spell:  if a pull goes wrong, the magician sends in a Companion of Necessity and calls off the normal elemental pet, allowing the Companion of Necessity to blur the foe(s).

Companion of Necessity can also be tactically applied as a splitting tool when pulling if used carefully.

Trivia[]

The Companion of Necessity pet may have been inspired by the considerably less useful level 55 Rage of Zomm pet and level 56 Dyzil's Deafening Decoy.  All three have the appearance of fire elementals and serve to distract and stall enemies while the magician takes other actions.
